Water is an attractive, sparkly and fun object to small children and pets. They don't understand the consequence of falling in while reaching for a toy. It is not realistic to presume that pool or water access will be restricted at every moment of the day. Do you know why traditional pool alarms and gates can fail to protect your child? Floating pool alarms designed to sense motion are acceptable for still water. However, as most pool owners know, it's simply not practical to switch the alarm off and on every time you get in and out of the pool all day. It's too easy to forget to reactivate it. The motion sensor surface "eye" type alarms are useful during periods of non-use. However, they must be turned off when the pool is in use and reactivated every time you leave the pool area. Again, it is easy for family members to forget to turn it on, especially if someone is simply running into the house for a minute for a drink, the phone, or to answer the doorbell.

Older children who may be safe around the water are simply not responsible enough to remember to reactivate alarms or secure gates each and every time they exit the pool area. Also, it is not likely the the access ladder will consistently be hoisted up out of a toddler's reach.  

If a pool is being serviced or treated, automatic covers and alarms are typically turned off.  If floating alarms or perimeter alarms are causing too many false alarms caused by the family members or a pet, people simply become accustomed to ignoring the alarm signal, or, worse, discontinue using them during the day because it's inconvenient. These are some reasons why an additional layer of protection is necessary.
